What is the Wirral Egg Run? Who can take part? Do I need anything special about my bike? When is the next Toy / Egg run going to be? Do I need to register in advance? Is it essential to bring an Egg? How many bikes take part?
What is the Wirral Egg Run?The Wirral Egg Run is an annual event which raises money for local children’s charities and donates Easter eggs to hospitalised children. Traditionally it takes place on the Sunday immediately preceding Easter. The 2008 Egg Run will be no exception, the allocated date being Sunday 16th March. Several thousand participants take part in the event.
Participants gather on motorcycles at New Brighton and ride a 20 mile pre-determined route to Clatterbridge hospital. Once there, they deliver their Easter eggs in time for distribution for Easter Sunday. Whilst the donation and delivery of Easter eggs forms the core iconic tradition of the Egg Run, the more significant aspect is now the delivery by participants of cash donations to contribute to nominated charities.
Spectators line the route and can also contribute their donations. Official Wirral Egg Run collectors are present at New Brighton, Clatterbridge and along the route. Separate fund raising events are held across the Wirral, co-ordinated under the auspices of The Wirral Egg Run.
Who can take part?Anyone who is licensed to ride a motorcycle. You must be fully licensed and insured and wear appropriate protective clothing, including a road legal crash helmet.
Do I need anything special about my bike? No, nothing at all. It must be fully road legal, taxed, insured and, if over 3 years old, MOT’d. Trikes and sidecars are welcome, as are mopeds and scooters. We welcome classic and vintage bikes too. Quad bikes are welcome, as long as they are fully licensed and legal for road use – but these are the only four wheel vehicles that can take part.
When is the next Toy / Egg run going to be?The Wirral Egg Run will take place on Sunday March 16th. The Run will leave New Brighton at 11a.m. but it is essential that you get there early. Bikes normally start arriving at the prom at around 0830
Do I need to register in advance? No. we tried advance registration in 2007 but it was not really practical. Just turn up on the day and enjoy the Run
Is it essential to bring an Egg?No, but you can if you wish. The Jellybean appeal have made it clear to us that, whilst they welcome eggs, they get overwhelmed by the amount that we take to the hospital – in 2007 there were over 3000. A donation is very welcome – cash or cheque is fine, or you can donate via our website.
How many bikes take part?We think that the Wirral Egg Run is the largest event of its kind in Europe. An accurate count of how many bikes take part is very difficult to achieve. Estimates vary, but somewhere between 3,500 and 7,000 bikes take part. There have been unofficial counts taken at Clatterbridge but we know that many riders do not go into Clatterbridge.
