History

The Wirral Easter Egg Run started in April 1981 and was clubs ride out by Empress Motorcycle Club from New Brighton to Arrowe Park Hospital. About 20 bikes took part with every rider and pillion taking an Easter Egg to give to the children who were staying in hospital over the Easter period.

In 1982, the Second Egg run expanded with friends of the Empress MCC also joining the run, bringing the number of motorcycles to just over 50.
The run increased in size every year and in 1986 approximately 250 bikes, ranging from mopeds and scooters through to tourers and sports bikes, took part donating over 400 Easter eggs.

An accurate count was taken in 1990 of 483 bikes (over 800 people as most of the bikes had two people on them), after which the run started growing at such a rate (over 1,500 bikes in 1994) that an official count was getting harder to record.
Due to coverage of the national motorcycle press there was a huge jump in figures to around 4000 bikes in 1996, with 30 police bikes and 100 marshals escorting the run.

In 1998 it was decided that due to the vast amount of Easter eggs being collected that monetary donations would be asked for instead of Easter eggs, as some people would still bring eggs but the children’s ward at Arrowe Park Hospital would also benefit from the toys / equipment.
In 1999 well over 8,000 Easter eggs and £1250 was raised and toys / equipment was purchased for the children’s ward.
In April 2000 the destination of the run had to change from Arrowe Park Hospital to Clatterbridge Hospital, because with Arrowe Park being the main Accident & Emergency department, they could not cope with the influx of bikes as it was getting increasingly difficult for doctors, nurses and ambulances to enter / leave the hospital when the run arrived.
With a police estimate of between 8000 and 15000 bikes, the amount of eggs donated was at such a scale that it was impossible to count with estimates of 20000 Easter eggs. Money raised this year grew to £6500.
2004 – 5000 bikes and approximately 8000 people.

The 2005 – 2006 the runs were unofficial, although there was a good attendance by Street Legal bikers and great support along the route from the public. – The Gumball Egg Run’s :o )

2007 – Registration was attempted to comply with the Authorities wishes, this was not a success. The Egg Run however was a resounding success – Many thanks to those that worked so tirelessly, to have the run placed on a “Legal Footing” and to those that volunteered themselves and services for a good cause. The bike count was estimated at 6,000 with some 8,500 eggs delivered and donations amounting to an amazing £15,189-00

2008 – Following an emotional summer for many in 2007. The Committee reconvened with new members and personalities joining the Committee. There was a lot to learn, a lot to accept with regards to Health & Safety Legislation.

There was also the legal point that due to amount of funds now being donated that the “WIRRAL EGG RUN” needed to become a registered Charity.

Through the years the run has become a major tourist event and this has been acknowledge far and wide with WIRRAL Borough Council giving support at many levels along with Merseyside Police and our Sponsors.  This assistance brought the best out of the Organisers and an Event Plan to be proud of.  16th March saw many bikes assembling at New Brighton for the run. The start was overseen by the Mayor of Wirral and other dignitaries. The official declaration for 2008 was 7,000 bikes/trikes and scooters, they gave up counting the eggs (3,300) and a cheque for £25,000 was presented to the “Jellybean Appeal” on 4th May.

On auditing the finalised accounts, there may well be a little more to come……………

On 9th May 2008 – “The Wirral Egg Run” became a Registered Charity: 1124006.

The Wirral Egg Run Committee are now looking towards raising more money through locally held functions, events, sponsorship as well as the continuing support from the public at large.

A BIG Thank You and respect to you all, for all your help and contributions.
